Why won't you eat Darling I whispered compassionately With a long gentle stroke on the cheek While automatically delaying The swallowing of another gulp Of unsweetened lemon green tea So as to better feel its taste One would think It's true you’ve been sleeping Late into the afternoon yet again But look now it's already dark outside And you haven't taken anything All day long Though I know you got hungry At some point Before even properly waking up And again Before going back to sleep Reaching for that soothing Blanket of oblivion Now you act all detached As if you couldn't even be touched By such a mortal thing As plain hunger But you know that's simply not true It can't be ’Cause as long as you're a living being With a soul and spirit yes But also a body Don't forget the body My love That unrelenting All-leveling pang of the stomach will Always be part of this life You may stifle it Pretend it's not there Even teach it to swallow its roar In quiet obedience to the unyielding Master But you know it will just be waiting For that perfect window of opportunity To break free from the crushing cage Of forced submission So why won't you eat Darling Look you’re all grown-up now There is no more room for games Here just have a piece Of chocolate It's the one you liked so much yesterday Try a biscuit or a sandwich Or even a piece of fruit You know as well as I do It will get easier after the first bite It always does Just like riding a bicycle You can't truly forget how to eat As long as you’re in this Crumbly earthen vessel You just need a good Jog of your memory (2022)
